Abstract/Summary

The 2001 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I report on the scientific basis of climate change suggested that the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) could weaken over the 21st century (Houghton et al. , 2001). In the following year, 2002, the US National Research Council's report Abrupt Climate Change: Inevitable Surprises? highlighted the North Atlantic circulation as at risk of abrupt change in a warming climate (NRC, 2002).
