Abstract/Summary

Modelling and mapping UK methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from agriculture, waste disposal and other miscellaneous sources 1. CH4 and N2O emission estimates for 2005 were spatially distributed for agriculture (livestock and crops/grassland/soils), natural sources (peat & wetlands, for CH4 only), waste disposal (landfill, for CH4 only), and sewage sludge spreading (CH4 and N2O). 2. Agricultural emission sources (livestock manures, enteric fermentation, crops/grassland/fertilisers) were distributed using the CEH/University of Edinburgh AENEID model, which incorporates agricultural census data, landcover data, agricultural practice information (e.g. fertiliser application rates, stocking densities) and emission source strength data from the BBSRC CH4 and N2O Emission Inventories for the UK. 3. The non-agricultural sources listed above were spatially distributed using AENEID on the basis of a combination of population census data, landcover data and data from the devolved authorities on landfill sites. Emission source strength estimates 4. Emission source strength data for CH4 and N2O were used as reported to Defra under the NAEI/GHGI project for 2005 for all sources, and all maps correspond to the totals reported.
