World Data Centre for Geomagnetism, Edinburgh: New data portal, API, and metadata tools

The World Data Centre (WDC) for Geomagnetism, Edinburgh serves the geomagnetism community providing access to geomagnetic data records for over 550 magnetic observatories worldwide, both past and present. It holds observatory minute, hourly, and annual means, as well as yearbooks, magnetic survey data and activity indices, with data reaching back to the early 1800s. It has recently been certified as a trustworthy data repository by the CoreTrustSeal Standards and Certification Board. In October 2024, new WDC data portal was released providing a step-change in accessibility to these important geomagnetic datasets. We will describe how this new data portal (https://wdc.bgs.ac.uk) enables users to interactively search for, and access geomagnetic datasets. New functionality that allow users to easily view data availability, plot data, view observatory metadata, and download datasets in a range of data formats will be demonstrated. This data portal is powered by a new API (Application Programming Interface) which has been developed to deliver the observatory data and metadata programmatically. We will outline the various endpoints that are available to users to incorporate into their software. In addition, we will introduce new tool which has been developed to allow geomagnetic observatory operators to review, update, and enhance the metadata records currently held for observatories.
