Dynamics of the Ross Ice Shelf

he Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea have been examined as part of the study of Antarctic coastal cyclones conducted at the Byrd Polar Research Center [Bromwich, 1991], using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data at 1.1-km resolution. Several glaciological features appear clearly on the images (Figure 1). The most interesting are flow stripes, which have not been detected before on this coarse resolution imagery. From these AVHRR features we have compiled a glaciological map, which shows strong evidence for changing flow of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
