Jackson, I.. 1982 The sand and gravel resources of the country north and west of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire : description of 1:25,000 resource sheet TF 16 and part of TF 17. London, UK, British Geological Survey, 95pp. (Mineral Assessment Report 94) (Unpublished)
Abstract
The geological maps of the Institute of Geological
Sciences, pre-existing borehole information, and 79 boreholes
drilled for the Industrial Minerals Assessment Unit
form the basis of the assessment of the sand and gravel
resources of the area north and west of Woodhall Spa,
Linconshire.
The survey proved the existence of a broad buried
valley beneath the Fenland which is infilled by an
extensive deposit of sand and gravel up to 11.3 m in
thickness. Potentially workable deposits on the flanks of
the Fenland proved to be less extensive, discontinuous
and much thinner.
The deposits of the district are divided into 7
resource blocks, containing between 3.1 and 13.3 km2 of
potentially workable sand and gravel. For each block the
geology of the deposits is described, and the mineral-bearing
area, the mean thickness of overburden and mineral
and the mean gradings are stated. Detailed borehole
data are also given. The geology, the position of the
boreholes and the outlines of the resource blocks are
shown on the accompanying map.
