Laxton, J.L; Ross, D.L.. 1981 The sand and gravel resources of the country around Newport-on-Tay, Fife region : description of 1:25,000 resource sheet NO 42 and parts of NO 32 and 52. Edinburgh, UK, British Geological Survey, 105pp. (Mineral Assessment Report 89) (Unpublished)
Abstract
The geological maps of the Institute of Geological
Sciences, fifty-four boreholes and thirty-four shallow
pits sunk for the Industrial Minerals Assessment Unit,
together with data from eight other boreholes and the
inspection of sand and gravel workings, form the basis
of the assessment of sand and gravel resources in the
Newport-on-Tay area, Fife Region.
All deposits in the area which might be potentially
workable for sand and gravel have been investigated
and a simple statistical method used to estimate the
volume. The reliability of the volume estimates is given
at the symmetrical 95 per cent probability level.
The 1 :250 00 map is divided into five resource
blocks, four of which are assessed statistically and
contain between 5.2 and 19.2 km2 of potentially
workable sand and gravel. For the fifth resource block
inferred assessments are offered for 3.6 km2 of mineral.
The geology of the deposits is described and the
mineral-bearing area, the mean thickness of
overburden and mineral, and the mean grading are
stated. Detailed borehole data are given. The geology
and the outlines of the resource blocks, the position of
boreholes and shallow pits used in the assessment are
shown on the accompanying map.
