Abstract/Summary

Prepared for Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs by Economics for the Environment Consultancy Ltd (eftec) and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). This report examines the key parameters to be measured and recorded in a water purification service account within the requirements of the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting — Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) framework. This includes the definition of the service, ecosystem processes, key pollutants, and links with water uses and beneficiaries. A “proof of concept” case study is provided that demonstrates a practical approach for measuring and valuing the ecosystem contribution to water quality. The report conclusions focus on recommendations for developing a national level account.
