Abstract
Between June 2019 and February 2020 the UK saw a succession of severe flood events. Many river flows in northern England, the Midlands and on both sides of the English/Welsh border exceeded their highest on record, and some defences were overwhelmed. The impact of widespread, prolonged and in places, repeated flooding reinforces the importance of detailed analyses of such events within a historical context to inform the assessment of future flood risk in a changing world.
