Abstract
The
British
Geological
Survey
completed
its
coverage
of
first
editions
of
the
UK
land
and
continental
shelf
area
at
a
scale
of
1:250
000
in
1992.
The
series
consists
of
sea
bed
sediment
maps,
Quaternary
geology
maps,
solid
geology
maps,
gravity
anomaly
maps
and
magnetic
anomaly
maps
on
a
1°
by
2°
UTM
grid.
The
Wight
Sheet
covers
part
of
the
central
English
Channel
and
part
of
adjacent
southern
England
as
delimited
by
the
points
51
oN
2°W,
51°N
OOE,
SOoN
OOE
and
SOoN
2°W.
The
first
edition
of
the
Wight
Sheet
(solid
geology)
was
the
first
of
the
solid
geology
maps
in
this
series
and
was
published
by
the
then
IGS
in
1977.
It
was
compiled
not
by
BGS
geologists
but
by
D.
Curry
and
A.J.
Smith
(University
College,
London)
and
D.
Hamilton
(University
of
Bristol).
