Abstract/Summary

Exposure of brown trout to a single dose of malachite green (2.27 ppm) caused a significant elevation of blood cortisol levels within 1 h. After 4 weeks of daily exposure to malachite green, however, this stress response was totally abolished. Daily treatment had no long-term effects on basal plasma cortisol levels, or on the numbers of circulating erythrocytes, thrombocytes and lymphocytes. Blood neutrophil numbers were significantly reduced in malachite green-treated fish, an effect thought to be due to a decreased ectoparasitic load.
