Abstract/Summary

Reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated for barotropic and baroclinic Rossby waves incident on a step-profile sea-floor scarp, stratification being modelled by two layers of slightly different density. Almost total reflection occurs except at frequencies low enough to permit or nearly permit baroclinic waves on both sides of the scarp. Applications to the Celtic Sea shelf and the Kermadec Ridge north of New Zealand are briefly discussed, together with implications for ocean circulation and extension of the model to an oceanic ridge.
