Abstract
Macroinvertebrate biomonitoring tools in the UK (RIVPACS) and the Republic of Ireland (Q System) are based on samples collected by a standard kick sample and a search. Rivers that are too deep to wade present a problem in that these techniques are not suitable. Different sampling methodologies must be employed in deep rivers. The effectiveness of three techniques for sampling macroinvertebrates in deep rivers (long handled pond net, dredge and air-lift) was tested in a number of Irish rivers. Recommendations are made for the techniques to be used to sample deep rivers.
