Abstract/Summary

This report is a preliminary investigation of the interactions between surface waves and the longer period motions due to tides and surges. The aim is to study the feasibility of developing a combined model of tides, surges and waves with particular application to flood prediction. The theoretical background of the interactions between tide and surge motion and the surface waves is summarised. The modified equations for the conservation of momentum for tide and surge motion and conservation of wave spectral energy density are derived. Some calculations of the magnitude of the interaction terms have been made, using results of existing surge/tide and wave models.
