Abstract
The field work during ”Polarstern” cruise ANT XVI/2 aimed to measure circulation and water mass properties in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, to investigate the contribution of the Weddell Sea to the ocean's role in climate. In this respect water mass modification plays an
important role, because it leads to the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water which is an essential part of the global thermohaline circulation.
