Abstract/Summary

We have designed and structured an online module to teach graduate students about remote sensing of the troposphere from space. The module can stand alone, although it can also be easily incorporated into a standard course management system. As an interactive, online "textbook", the exercises provide immediate feedback to students of their comprehension of the material. The scientific content is presented as study pages with three overarching topics: remote sensing from space, the basics of radiation transfer, and retrieval procedures for tropospheric satellite data. Five exercise types (with further variants) challenge students to improve their understanding of the topics as they progress through them. The module is intended for e-learning and not for student assessment per se. During development the module was tested at a feedback workshop by both students and senior colleagues, and is used currently by several European research groups. It is publicly available. The paper concludes with a distillation of our experience in the development of the module, together with the lessons learned and the requirements needed to develop a successful module.
