Abstract
Participants at a celebratory lunch hosted by Cambridge University Press to mark the publication of Clapham et al.’s Flora of the British Isles in 1952 received a menu card with a caricature of Sir Arthur Tansley as a tree, labelled Supercilius tremendus. I suggest that this label refers primarily to Tansley’s eyebrows, rather than his character.
