Wilson, A.A.; Chisholm, J.J.. 2002 Reference sections in the Lower Coal Measures at Elland, West Yorkshire. Nottingham, UK, British Geological Survey, 22pp. (IR/02/027) (Unpublished)

Abstract

Three former quarries and a working quarry near Elland (West Yorkshire) have recently provided a complete section through 136 m of Lower Coal Measures. Exposure extends from 11 m below the Soft Bed Coal to the lower beds of the Elland Flags. There has been an unique opportunity to record the Atlas Quarry section when it was enlarged immediately prior to landfill.
There are eight marine bands, four of which are new records for the immediate area. Details of faunal and lithological zonation within the bands are given. Numerous mussel bands include one below the Hard Bed Coal which is new to the area.
The sections are located in 1:50 000 Sheet 77 (Huddersfield) and straddle the boundary between 1:10 000 Sheets SE 11 NW and SE 12 SW.
