Abstract

This report describes the Geographic Information System (GIS) developed as a front-end to the BGS Rock Stress database. The Rock Stress data are derived from borehole breakout measurements within boreholes and describe the local stress field. The GIS covers the entire onshore and offshore UK, with 350 borehole records of rock stress. Data are included for preprepared rose diagram display and as ‘raw’ stress magnitude and direction data for vector display. The GIS has been modified to include three dialog tools that allow the user to select data on a number of criteria. These include; plotting as roses, plotting as vectors, selection on borehole method, selection on depth ranges, select for particular chronostratigraphy etc. The Rock Stress GIS incorporates a variety of layers that mainly are derived from the BGS GDI data set.
