Geological collections associated with the Scottish Polar explorer William Speirs Bruce (1867-1921)

During the last decade of the 19 th century and the early part of the 20 th , the Scottish scientist William Speirs Bruce took part in pioneering Polar expeditions to both the Arctic and the Antarctic. He is best remembered for his leadership of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902–1904) to the Weddell Sea and the South Orkney Islands, but his Arctic endeavours in Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and Svalbard are also noteworthy. His interests ranged widely across meteorology, oceanography, and marine biology, but geological research was an important component of his expeditions’ programmes. Many of the rock and fossil collections thus generated are held by National Museums Scotland, but others are more widely dispersed. This is particularly true of key specimens sent for specialist study and the collections made independently by geologists accompanying Bruce's expeditions. Here an attempt is made to bring together the details of these various collections and link them with the development of Bruce's Polar career. His achievements are not much celebrated, in marked contrast to the public acclaim afforded to contemporary ‘Heroic Era’ Polar explorers, but the geological collections stand as a solid memorial to his life and work.
