The North West Highlands
Geopark was officially
launched on 12 September
2005 by Professor Aubrey
Manning at the Knockan Crag National
Nature Reserve Visitor Centre.
Professor Manning, the presenter of the
BBC's Talking Landscapes and Earth Story
programmes, and emeritus professor of
natural history at Edinburgh University
said: “This is a most spectacularly
beautiful part of the British Isles. Some of
the oldest rocks in the Earth are here. On
top you have Torridonian sandstones which
produce these extraordinary mountains,
making the landscape unique.
