This report describes the G-BASE summer field campaign of 2005 carried out between 25th June and 4th August in Essex and areas of urban London, such as Tilbury, Basildon, Brentwood and Romford. Sampling was carried out by two field teams, Team A and Team B, each with 9 volunteer students and two members of staff. In 4.5 weeks a total area of approximately 2600 km2 was sampled with the collection of 646 stream sediments, 510 surface waters, 528 panned concentrates, 1270 surface soils and 1229 profile soils. Within one week of urban soil sampling an area of ca. 140 km2 was covered with 537 surface soils and 484 rofile soil samples collected. The sampling campaign was run from four base camps, at Gosfield near Braintree, Elmstead Market near Colchester, Chelmsford University campus and the University of East London, Docklands campus. At the latter two accommodations both teams stayed together due to lack of available accommodation in South Essex. Field procedures were carried out in accordance with the 2005 G-BASE Field Procedures Manual. Health and Safety incidents and recommendations are also reported.
