Abstract/Summary

A comparative study of puffins Fratercula arctica on Isle of May and St Kilda found major differences in biology. Conditions appeared to be very favourable at the former colony, less so at the latter. This also held for some other seabirds. Realistic modelling of populations may have to be restricted to those where biological data are collected.
