Abstract/Summary
When compared to the previous collection from the first meeting (IOBC-WPRS Bulletin 58), this collection of abstracts and papers, from the second meeting of the IOBC-WPRS working group on the "Benefits and Risks of Exotic Biological Control Agents", provides a good overview of the further development of the group. While the first meeting focused almost exclusively on the one species that provided a catalyst for the formation of this group, the ladybird Harmonia axyridis, the collection of papers this time reflects a much broader taxonomic spread of invasive predators and parasitoids. This development is clearly to be welcomed, representing as it does the maturing of the group into something better reflecting its name. The working group continued to be very active in the period between the first meeting, in 2009, and the second, in 2011. Not only have many members of the group made significant individual contributions to the science of invasive predators and parasitoids, but a number of new collaborations between members of the group have come to fruition. A further more broadly focused special issue of BioControl (volume 56, issue 4) and resulting book, Invasive Alien Arthropod Predators and Parasitoids: An Ecological Approach, have been published. The second meeting in Hluboká, in the Czech Republic, was an excellent opportunity for both established group members and new participants to get together to discuss these developments. Furthermore, it provided a forum for new ideas and collaborations for the coming years; the results of some of these will undoubtedly feature at the third meeting of the IOBC-WPRS working group in 2014.
