Abstract/Summary

Although we appreciate that the points made by Bailey are relevant to any discussion of interpreting stratigraphic patterns as being astronomically paced, we take this opportunity to discuss the details of the Carboniferous of the Pennine Basin beyond simple rock thickness–time concepts or models and reiterate points relevant to the conclusions of Waters & Condon (2012), namely the nature of the expression of sea-level variation within the Carboniferous Pennine Basin and its regional and global geological context.
