Abstract/Summary

A geologist may be aware of the power of computers and their ability to help him in his work. He may nevertheless be unable to see clearly where their contribution might come, and be unaware of the services that exist to help him. It is for such an individual that this book was written. The intention is not to explain detailed techniques, but rather to encourage the reader to examine his own working methods, and to develop criteria to help him in applying the computer. Many text books are available which explain how computers work, how to write a program, or describe methods of data analysis in geology or related subjects. Some of these are listed in the references section, and others can be found by browsing in a library or bookshop. There are also many manuals describing the use of specific programs or computer installations. It is hoped that from this book the reader will gain background knowledge which will sssist him in using the computing literature for his own purposes and to make effective use of his available computing facilities. In short, its aim is to help the geologist to make the computer work for him.
