To analyse, interpret, and store the vast amount of data confronting them, geologists are increasingly turning to the use of computer techniques. Although such techniques have much in common with those employed in other branches of sciences, methods which involve data distributed in space and time have been developed primarily for use in the earth sciences. The computer has proved on great value in the preparation of geological maps and it shows promise as a means of simulating geological processes. Under its impact the whole pattern of geological investigation is changing.
