This Sheet Description describes the Quaternary and solid geology of the Sabkha Mati North 1:100 000 scale geological map of the UAE. Over 500 observation points were made throughout the district. The Sabkha Mati North district covers about 2650 km2 of the country stretching inland from the coast near Barakah to latitude 23°30’N. Miocene bedrock crops out across most of the area, covered by a gravelly deflation veneer or by thin sheets of sand and sabkha veneers. The Dam, Shuwaihat and Baynunah formations crop out successively south-eastwards as the land surface rises in that direction from sea level to about 80 m asl. The district is renowned for a rich assemblage of fossils that have been recovered from the Baynunah bone bed at the base of the Baynunah Formation). They include the bones of large terrestrial vertebrates, crocodiles, ostrich eggs and fish. Outliers of weakly-cemented Quaternary (Pleistocene) sediments occur sporadically towards the south-east, including very small outcrops of Madinat Zayed and Ghayathi formations, surrounded by modern deposits (Rub al Khali Formation) of aeolian sand in the form of fields of Low, Barchan and Zibar Dunes and Sand Sheets. Gravel veneer and Sabkha Mati Gravels underlie small areas of the low-lying ground in the north-west, whereas thin sand veneers are widespread in the south and east. Sabkha is extensively developed, particularly in the western part of the district. The area has no economic mineral deposits at the surface.
