This Sheet Description describes the Quaternary and bedrock geology of the Al Mughrib 1:100 000 scale geological map. About 210 observation points were made throughout the district which covers about 3260 km2 of the country due south of Ruwais and west of the Liwa oasis and extends to the UAE-Saudi Arabia border in the south. The only bedrock exposures in the area are small interdune outcrops of Miocene upper Baynunah Formation (Hamra Member) in the extreme NW corner of the area. The rest of the map area is underlain by Quaternary (Pleistocene) sediments, comprising two relatively consolidated clastic fluvial-aeolian sedimentary units (Madinet Zayed and Ghayathi Formations) and a variety of modern, loose active aeolian sand deposits in various morphological forms, including low dunes, barchan fields, sand sheets, grouped together in the Rub al Khali Formation.
