Abstract/Summary

This volume is part of a series of special issues of the Journal of African Earth Sciences that will be dedicated to the Geology of the African Plate. This series of volumes was the brainchild of Professor Henri Kampunzu, late editor-in-chief of the JAES, who passed away late in 2004. In particular, this special issue deals with a host of complex aspects of the Phanerozoic geology and biostratigraphy of the African continent, from tectonism, stratigraphy and economic potential, to floral and faunal evolution. The original intent of this volume was to focus on “Phanerozoic Orogenic Belts and Basins of the African Plate”, but it soon became apparent that structural and stratigraphic concepts need to be integrated with the wealth of biostratigraphic information that Africa has contributed to understanding the evolution of flora and fauna on Earth during the Phanerozoic. Hence, the revised title of “Phanerozoic evolution of Africa” was chosen.
