Abstract/Summary
Groundwater is an essential part of Scotland’s environment and economy. It sustains the flow in our rivers and plays an important role in maintaining many of our fragile ecosystems; groundwater also provides high quality, reliable and inexpensive public and private water supplies and dilutes and removes many of society’s contaminants. The importance of ground-water to Scotland is becoming more appreciated by a broad audience, largely driven by several pieces of European legislation, most notably the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD). This thematic set of papers presents the results of recent work carried out to further understanding of groundwater in Scotland. The articles are not primarily academic papers, but discuss the real and practical issues involved in developing sufficient understanding of groundwater in Scotland to effectively develop and manage the resource. The collection serves two purposes: •it provides an introduction to the current understanding of groundwater resources in Scotland; •it summarizes how Scotland, with its data-poor hard rock hydrogeology, has been able to respond to the challenges set down by recent European Directives. The papers were first presented at a conference on 12 November 2003: Groundwater in Scotland – moving up a gear. The conference was convened by the Hydrogeological Group of the Geological Society, London, and was attended by more than 100 participants from diverse backgrounds: consultants, researchers, regulators and abstractors.
