Abstract/Summary

Invasive Alien Species (IAS) pose a major threat to biodiversity, society and the economy (estimated cost 12.7 billion € in Europe annually). Europe has committed to tackling IAS; an information system is a prerequisite to meet Strategic Goal B, target 9 of the COP 10 Decision X/2 and is essential to underpin IAS strategy and effective early warning and rapid response systems for the prevention and control of IAS. The GB Non-Native Species Information Portal (GB-NNSIP) is an on-line information system designed to provide an overview of the non-native fauna and flora of Great Britain. The central component is a species register, comprising a list of 3792 non-native species, together with basic information about their origin, ecology and impact. This is linked to distributional data held on the National Biodiversity Network Gateway. For 300 species that are either harmful or interesting, more detailed information is supplied as factsheets. For 10 species that can be recognized by the general public, there is an on-line system (RISC) for reporting occurrences. This has served as a prototype for developing rapid-reaction capability, whereby particularly harmful new arrivals can be immediately notified to the relevant bodies. Here I provide an overview of GB-NNSIP within the context of other initiatives and projects, such as Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventory for Europe (DAISIE), and discuss opportunities for developing a European-wide information network to support implementation of the post-2010 EU Biodiversity Strategy.
