Abstract
Myths about forestry and water:
The beneficial effects of forests have sometimes been exaggerated – by conservationists wanting to protect natural areas, and by commercial foresters wishing to justify new plantations.
Apart from a few relatively rare cloud and coastal forests there is no evidence that forests ‘attract’ or enhance rainfall.
Forests can sometimes increase dry weather flows, but in general they are more likely to reduce it.
Forests ability to moderate floods is much less than often claimed, being restricted to small storm magnitudes and limited catchment sizes.
