Abstract/Summary

The Geological Surveying and Investigation in 3 Dimensions (GSI3DTM) software tool and methodology has been developed by Dr. Hans-Georg Sobisch (INSIGHT GmbH) over the last 18 years. Initially development was in collaboration with Drs. Carsten Hinze and Heinrich Mengeling of the NLfB (Niedersaechsisches Landesamt fuer Bodenforschung - Soil and Geological Survey of Lower Saxony) based in Hannover (Hinze, Sobisch and Voss, 1999; Sobisch 2000). BGS acted as a test bed for the accelerated development of the tool and methodology from 2002 and from 2006 to 2010 BGS and Hans-Georg Sobisch worked on the extension of GSI3D to deal with complex bedrock geology. Many people have used the software and contributed to the development over the past 10 years and it is credit to those users (and their patience) that GSI3D has developed into the useful and usable tool it is now.
