Abstract/Summary

This report describes the G-BASE summer field campaign of 2006 carried out between 24th June and 26th August in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and urban areas of NE London and Southend. Sampling was carried out by only one field team with 9 volunteer students and two members of staff. In 6.5 weeks the regional sampling campaign covered a total area of approximately 2000 km2 and collected 399 stream sediments, 333 surface waters, 350 panned concentrates, 1021 surface soil and 989 profile soil samples. Within 2.5 weeks of urban soil sampling an area of approximately 178 km2 was covered with 711 surface soils and 711 profile soil samples being collected. The sampling campaign was run from three base camps at Hertford, Shalstone near Brackley and Queen Mary University, Mile End campus, London. From the latter accommodation the team ran the urban sampling campaign. Field procedures were carried out in accordance to the 2005 G-BASE Field Procedures Manual. Health and Safety incidents and recommendations are also reported.
