Abstract/Summary

The Countryside Information System is described; this is a new computer software tool which enables quick and easy access to a range of data about the British countryside. Woodland data from several sources are used to demonstrate the potential application of the system. Reasons for differences between data sources and possible implications for policy makers are discussed.
