Abstract/Summary

The Faroe–Shetland Channel (FSC) is covered by 25 000 km2 of 3D seismic data which have been used to image the morphology of the sea bed. Among many of the observed geological features, the image reveals a system of down-slope linear gullies and associated debris fans on the floor of the FSC. These gullies and fans are interpreted as the products of high-energy mass flow. These features are not observed elsewhere in the FSC and are localized t o this part of the West Shetland Margin. Their restricted geographical extent and episodic longevity implies that there must have been a significant difference in the nature of the ice margin here, possibly caused by the outflow of an ancient ice stream that fed the gully and fan systems with semi-liquid sediments on this part of the West Shetland Shelf.
