The publication of this report is an action arising from the 2009 Scottish Soil Framework. It aims to contribute to the wider understanding that soils are a vital part of our economy, environment and heritage, to be safeguarded for existing and future generations. The State of Scotland’s Soil Report collates the most recent information available from a variety of sources and builds on previous reports by SEPA (2001) and Towers et al. (2006) and is part of wider environmental reporting activities. It adds to our understanding of soil by using a conceptual model to help describe the drivers and pressures that affect the state of the soil, how these pressures result in a number of threats to soil functions, and their consequences for the wider environment, the economy and society. Finally we describe potential management responses.
